Set against the historic grandeur of the newly renovated Joburg City Library, The Intern by David Tlale brought a vibrant exploration of colour, texture and contemporary African fashion to South African Fashion Week AW27. Located in the heart of Johannesburg’s CBD, the library houses more than a million books and stands as a symbol of the city’s rich cultural heritage, making it a fitting backdrop for a showcase rooted in creativity and identity.

The venue also carried personal significance for David Tlale, one of Johannesburg’s most celebrated fashion names, who presented his Restoration collection in the library’s striking surrounds. “I was born and bred in Johannesburg; it's a city where dreams are made,” he said, reflecting the connection between the city, its creative community and the stories expressed through fashion.

Amid towering bookshelves and historic interiors, the runway became a meeting point between heritage and contemporary design. Through The Intern by DT, presented in collaboration with the David Tlale Academy, emerging designers brought their own perspectives to the stage, exploring bold silhouettes, expressive prints and intricate embellishment.

Gold set a glamorous tone. One standout look paired a cropped, heavily embellished gold top with a voluminous midi skirt, its lustrous surface traced with intricate, feather-like motifs that cascaded down the fabric. The interplay between the ornate bodice and the fluid, full skirt gave the ensemble a sense of occasion, while black pointed-toe heels and stacked gold cuffs added a polished, contemporary finish. It was a study in texture and movement, with metallic sheen doing much of the talking.

Copper brought a different kind of drama. A one-shoulder top in glossy burnt-orange satin featured an architectural peplum, its angular panels sweeping outward before falling over high-waisted trousers patterned in bold cream-and-brown stripes. The contrast between the fluid satin and the graphic print gave the look its impact. Finished with delicate strappy heels and gold statement earrings, the ensemble played with proportion and pattern, balancing sharp structure with fluid draping.

Elsewhere, the collection leaned into colour and tactile detail. Vibrant shades of red, yellow and green appeared alongside expressive prints, fringes and ruffles. A fringed red skirt worn with a printed blazer offered a particularly playful take on statement dressing, while sculptural green heels with feather detailing at the back carried the look’s theatrical sensibility down to the final detail.

Rather than relying on a single signature, the collection moved between glamour, graphic pattern and exuberant embellishment, allowing each intern to express a different facet of their visual language.

Beyond the clothes, The Intern by David Tlale offered emerging creatives a platform to bring their ideas to one of South Africa’s key fashion stages. Presented in collaboration with the David Tlale Academy, the initiative combines runway exposure with mentorship and practical insight into the realities of building a career in fashion.
