It is Possible to Go From Architectural Designer to Furniture Artisan

Jared Fynn

In the dynamic world of design, where creativity knows no bounds, the transition from one discipline to another can open new avenues of expression and innovation. Jared Fynn, the founder of CloudHaus, exemplifies this transformative journey, having successfully transitioned from an architectural designer to a furniture artisan. His story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the unrelenting pursuit of one's dreams.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Jared Fynn, an architectural designer turned furniture artisan, founded CloudHaus in 2024, specialising in design and home decor.

CloudHaus, a burgeoning name in the design and home decor industry, was born out of a simple yet profound need. As Jared often mentions in his Instagram reels and TikToks, "No one in South Africa was selling the furniture me and all my friends wanted, so I decided to make it myself." What started as a passion project quickly evolved into a thriving business. By documenting the behind-the-scenes process, Jared attracted attention and orders through social media, propelling CloudHaus into the spotlight.

The Inspiration Behind CloudHaus

Jared's background is a rich tapestry of experiences. From owning a video agency to being an influencer and an architectural designer, he has worn many hats. "I've always loved the risk and rewards of entrepreneurship," Jared shares. "CloudHaus is the culmination of these experiences." His love for design and creativity, coupled with the fast-paced growth of the business, makes CloudHaus feel like a new adventure every day.

The transition from architectural design to furniture design was a natural progression for Jared. "Architecture is a wonderful world, and I encourage every creative person to explore it," he says. However, the cutthroat nature of the architectural field led him to seek another outlet for his creativity. Furniture design, with its smaller scale and more immediate gratification, provided the perfect medium. "Furniture design is like a more creative version of architectural design," Jared explains.

Overcoming Challenges

Starting a new business always comes with its fair share of challenges. For Jared, imposter syndrome was a significant hurdle. "The biggest challenge I faced was the battle within that most creative people face," he admits. However, he overcame these feelings through the undeniable quality of his work. Structure and routine play crucial roles in maintaining his productivity and motivation. "A gym session first thing in the morning and meditating on the plan for the day helps me stay on track," Jared reveals.

Seeing his innovative designs come to life is a source of immense joy for Jared. "Nothing can match the feeling of seeing a design go from sketch to technical drawing to the real thing," he says. Each order presents new opportunities to push the boundaries of what furniture can look and feel like in a space. The journey to perfecting the "Pebble Couch," one of CloudHaus' most recognised designs, was filled with trials and tribulations, but the result was worth every effort.

Handling Doubts and Skepticism

Launching a unique business venture in South Africa came with its own set of obstacles and skepticism. However, Jared's clear vision for CloudHaus kept him focused. "No great company is built without obstacles," he says. His creative loft studio in the heart of Jo’burg, where he displays his designs, has been a dream come true. "Come visit us at 10 Van Beek Street, New Doornfontein, for a chat about your next custom piece of furniture!" he invites.

Jared's dual passion for business and creativity is evident in his daily routine. "Every day is a balancing act between the two," he acknowledges. Having structures in place to balance creativity and business operations is essential. Continuous learning from books and people around him keeps him grounded and informed.

Jared credits much of his success to the guidance and inspiration from his parents, both entrepreneurs, his close friend and brother Sachin, and his girlfriend, who is an artist pushing boundaries in South Africa. "The people around me who are also in the creative entrepreneurial space are high sources of knowledge and inspiration," he says.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For young entrepreneurs starting out or facing difficulties, Jared advises, "Do your research, then go for it." The positive response from people online has been overwhelming and humbling for Jared. "Document your journey, build your audience with authentic storytelling and a great product or service. Great things take time, and there will be challenges. The important thing is how you respond to these challenges."

In the next 3-5 years, Jared envisions CloudHaus becoming a household name in the South African furniture market, known for its design, quality, and creative flair. He is driven by the belief that "Architects can change the world by not building buildings" - a quote by Virgil Abloh that resonates deeply with him.

Jared Fynn's journey from architectural designer to furniture artisan is a shining example of how following one's passion can lead to remarkable success. Through CloudHaus, he continues to inspire and create, proving that it is indeed possible to turn dreams into reality.
