Mzansi Philharmonic Announces 2026 National Tour with Maxim Vengerov

The Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra has announced its 2026 National Tour, Mzansi Meets the World, marking the orchestra’s 5th anniversary with a programme that places South African musicians alongside some of the world’s leading classical artists.

The tour will take place in December across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gqeberha, bringing international artistic talent to audiences across three of South Africa’s major cultural centres. At the centre of this year’s programme is internationally acclaimed violinist Maxim Vengerov, who will perform Brahms’ Violin Concerto with the Mzansi Philharmonic under the direction of American conductor Joseph Young.

The programme will also feature Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, known as the “Organ Symphony”, alongside a new South African composition commissioned specifically for the orchestra’s fifth-anniversary celebrations. Beyond the concert stage, Vengerov will lead a masterclass for young South African string musicians, extending the tour’s focus from performance to skills development and artistic exchange.

“The fifth anniversary is an opportunity not only to celebrate how far we have come, but to look ahead at the role this orchestra can play in developing South African talent and strengthening the country’s connection to the international classical music community.”

Vengerov’s participation places one of classical music’s most recognised performers at the centre of the orchestra’s anniversary programme. “It is an honour to join the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra for this landmark fifth anniversary tour,” said Vengerov. “South Africa possesses an incredible depth of musical spirit and talent. Performing the monumental Brahms Violin Concerto with this outstanding orchestra, coupled with the opportunity to work directly with young local string players in a masterclass, makes Mzansi Meets the World a truly special project for me.”

For the Mzansi Philharmonic, the collaboration is also part of a broader strategy of creating direct connections between South African musicians and international artists. Young, who has developed a reputation for dynamic interpretations and championing a broad orchestral repertoire, will conduct the full national tour programme.

The fifth-anniversary tour reflects that dual role. Internationally recognised artists will perform alongside South African musicians, while educational initiatives such as Vengerov’s masterclass are designed to create opportunities for emerging performers.
