Sony has long been known for making some of the easiest headphones to recommend. From the hugely successful WH-1000XM4 through to the latest WH-1000XM6, Sony consistently stuck to a formula that worked: exceptional noise cancelling, great sound quality, lightweight comfort and genuinely portable everyday usability. While competitors chased ultra-premium materials and heavier designs, Sony focused on making headphones people could comfortably wear all day, something products like the Apple AirPods Max never fully mastered because of their weight and bulk.
But with the unveiling of 1000X THE COLLEXION, Sony is showing that it can do premium luxury too.
The company has officially announced 1000X THE COLLEXION, a new flagship addition to its award-winning 1000X series that blends the brand’s industry-leading audio technology with a far more refined and luxurious design language. Sony also introduced a new Sandstone colourway for its popular WH-1000XM6 headphones.

The launch also celebrates ten years of Sony’s 1000X series, which first debuted with the MDR-1000X in 2016 and quickly became one of the most respected names in premium noise cancelling audio.
While Sony’s existing 1000X headphones have traditionally prioritised portability and practicality, 1000X THE COLLEXION shifts the focus towards craftsmanship, comfort and premium materials without abandoning the core performance the series is known for.

The headphones feature a newly designed metal headband with a matte sandblasted texture and hand-polished gloss finish, alongside soft faux leather materials that Sony says took two years to develop.
Integrated buttons and hidden microphone openings contribute to a cleaner, more seamless design aesthetic, while the headphones are available in Platinum and Black finishes.
Sony says comfort was another major focus, with larger earcups, a wider cushioned headband and softer stretchable leather designed for long listening sessions.
Audio remains central to the experience.
1000X THE COLLEXION introduces a newly developed driver unit using unidirectional carbon composite materials aimed at improving instrument separation, vocal clarity and overall soundstage performance.

Sony also collaborated with Grammy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated mastering engineers to refine the sound tuning, with the goal of delivering more natural vocals, balanced instruments and greater emotional detail in music playback.
The headphones are also the first to feature Sony’s DSEE Ultimate technology, which uses Edge-AI processing to upscale compressed audio files in real time and restore lost detail.
Another major addition is expanded 360 Reality Audio Upmix support, now offering dedicated modes for music, cinema and gaming content to create more immersive spatial audio experiences.
Despite the more luxurious positioning, Sony has retained much of what made the 1000X series so successful in the first place.
1000X THE COLLEXION uses the same core noise cancelling technology found in the acclaimed WH-1000XM6, including Sony’s Multi-Noise Sensor system with 12 microphones and Adaptive NC Optimizer technology.
Sony says the headphones still deliver the same intelligent adaptive noise cancellation, strong call quality, intuitive controls and reliable connectivity the series has become known for. Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours.
Alongside the launch of 1000X THE COLLEXION, Sony also announced a new Sandstone colour option for the WH-1000XM6.

The new finish joins the existing colour lineup while retaining the same audio and noise cancelling performance that helped cement the XM6 as one of the best all-round wireless headphones currently available.

Sony says 1000X THE COLLEXION will launch in South Africa in Platinum and Black colour options at a retail price of R15,999.
