Thebe Magugu’s Fall/Winter 2026 Is a Quiet Tribute to Heritage, with Bonang Matheba as Muse

South African designer Thebe Magugu returns for Fall/Winter 2026 with a collection that feels both intimate and expansive. At its heart lies the Mafeteng Capsule—a deeply personal meditation on heritage, identity, and origin. Anchoring the campaign is Bonang Matheba, the media powerhouse and style icon Magugu names as his muse this season.

“There is power in knowing exactly where you come from,” Magugu shared, grounding the collection in a sense of emotional clarity. The inspiration traces back to Mafeteng, a small town in Lesotho that continues to shape his creative language.

For Magugu, Matheba’s presence is symbolic and it is intrinsic. “I’ve always felt like Bonang embodies that with remarkable ease,” he noted, describing a woman who has built an entire universe around her presence. It’s this self-defined identity that mirrors the collection’s central themes—belonging, memory, and self-possession.

Fronting the campaign, Bonang Matheba appears in the limited-edition Mafeteng Dress in bone white, finished with the sculptural Kite Cap. The look is restrained yet commanding, allowing Magugu’s signature storytelling to unfold through form, texture, and intention rather than excess.

The Mafeteng Collection continues Magugu’s exploration of narrative-driven design, where each garment becomes a vessel for place and personal history. The choice of Bone White feels deliberate; quietly powerful, almost reflective; drawing the eye to silhouette and detail.

This collaboration brings together two figures who have each carved out influential, self-authored spaces within fashion and media, reinforcing a shared language of cultural impact and individuality.

The Mafeteng Capsule Collection will be available for preview on Saturday, 18 April, at Magugu House in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with an online release to follow on 23 April.
