25 Thoughts I Had Watching The Devil Wears Prada for the First Time As a Guy

With the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada set to release in May 2026, I finally sat down to watch the original film for the very first time. It’s one of those cultural touchstones I had always heard about but never experienced myself, until now. I’d seen the memes, heard the quotes, and watched countless references fly over my head. But actually watching the film is an entirely different experience. You realise why it’s become such a defining piece of pop culture: it isn’t just about fashion, or publishing, or the endless montage of fabulous coats and handbags. It’s about ambition, identity, and the cost of success; themes that remain just as relevant today as they were in 2006. These are my 25 unfiltered thoughts as a first-time viewer:
1. Has Meryl Streep ever been young?
2. Andy did dress like a grandma in the beginning.
3. Why is it that most men who work in fashion are ‘sassy’?
4. I've never seen a comfortable-looking New York apartment.
5. I think that the mood or countenance of someone you're with most of the time affects and can 6. shape who you are as a person. (Like how Emily was stern with Andy the way Miranda is with everyone.)
7. Andy's environment was bound to change her, so I feel her friends were unfair to say she changed.
8. Can't imagine someone like Miranda having children.
9. I felt sorry for Nigel when he didn’t get the job he thought was his.
10. Hated Christian Thompson.
11. For Andy to be called fat, that shows the word “fat” used to mean something completely different back then.
12. Still thinking about that perfectly good-looking steak Andy threw away.
13. Lol, imagine starving yourself because you want to look good in Paris but unironically landing in the hospital.
14. I wouldn't survive at Runway.
15. Fashion will never not be strange to me.
16. I'm guessing that the sequel will have Miranda opening her own publication with Andy as her head writer, Emily doing whatever she's good at, Doug probably there too, and Nigel as Miranda's business partner.
17. Miranda was great at her job but she didn’t even seem like a real person. So great at what she does but a terrible boss.
18. It’s the most unorthodox places and situations that will give you valuable lessons in life.
19. Miranda still expecting Andy to get her a flight to Miami in that weather was insane. She thought she was invincible, and after that situation with Jacqueline Follet, maybe she is.
20. Miranda casually asking for the Harry Potter manuscript is crazy. Makes you think about the level of power some people have obtained.
21. Kinda crazy to think that managing to get an unreleased manuscript but failing to book a flight in bad weather landed Andy as the PA who disappointed Miranda the most.
22. Christian didn’t get that manuscript for Andy as a favour.
Confuses me how Miranda is so emotionless but has managed to have a few husbands.
23. I bet Patricia (Miranda's dog) doesn’t even know that she's Miranda's dog.
24. Never understood how some leaders take their employees' fear as a compliment.
25. I hope Nate has grown up in the sequel, he came off as such a child.
