As time evolves, so do careers. South Africa’s unemployment rate currently stands at 32.7%, with the majority of the unemployment being a result of mismatch in qualifications and skills required by the labour market. What if unemployment in Mzansi could be eased by helping people better understand which careers are currently in demand?
According to the Department of Higher Education, occupations in high demand refers to occupations that experience high employment levels, high wage growth, high vacancy rates and high likelihood of seeing recruitment activity in the medium–term.
In a news interview, Paul Byrne, Head of Insight and Customer Success at Pnet, identified 8 careers that are in high demand based on an analysis of job market data on Pnet. These include:
Information Technology (IT)
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Engineering
Medical and Health Sciences
Architecture
Finance
Data Analysis
Logistics
Across industries, data from Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the first quarter of 2026, indicates that the highest employment levels in South Africa are:
Community and Social Services
Trade
Finance
Manufacturing
Transport
These observations do not suggest that South Africans should abandon their passions in favour of market trends. Rather, they serve as a guide that highlights the importance of understanding the realities of the labour market making career choices.
