adidas Launches First Dual-purpose Hybrid Fitness Racing Shoe, the Adizero Dropset Elite

Updated: Mar 31

adidas has unveiled what it calls a new chapter in performance footwear with the launch of the Adizero Dropset Elite, the brand’s first dual-purpose shoe designed specifically for hybrid fitness racing.

The new model merges two of adidas’ most established performance lines—the speed-driven Adizero and the stability-focused Dropset—into a single design built to handle both running and functional strength stations. The goal is simple: remove the long-standing trade-off athletes face between cushioning for speed and stability for strength work.

“Hybrid fitness racing is surging in popularity, but athletes have been forced to compromise between the cushioning and energy return of a running shoe and the stability and support of a training shoe,” said Aimee Arana, Global SVP & GM adidas Sportswear & Training. “We’ve eliminated that compromise by integrating the proven technology in our speed-focused Adizero line… with the best-in-class technology seen in our Dropset range.”

Arana pointed to adidas’ track record across both performance categories, citing race wins, world records, and the brand’s presence in global strength training environments as the foundation behind the hybrid design approach.

The Adizero Dropset Elite was developed at adidas’ Innovation Lab in Herzogenaurach, Germany, with direct input from elite hybrid athletes. Among those involved were HYROX competitors including two-time world champion Tim Wenisch, Graham Halliday, Ella Wilkinson, Fabian Eisenlauer, Jana Lebenstedt, and Jennifer Muir. Their training and race-day feedback shaped key performance needs such as carpet grip, sled push control, and stability during wall balls.

At the core of the shoe is Lightstrike Pro foam, designed for lightweight energy return during running segments. Surrounding this is an Energy Rim structure aimed at improving stability under load, particularly in high-force movements. The outsole features Continental™ rubber in a diamond pattern for enhanced grip across mixed surfaces, including indoor carpet used in HYROX-style events.

The design also includes an engineered 12mm heel drop intended to support more efficient body positioning during functional stations, while a Footadapt sockliner enhances foot awareness and control during both running and strength phases.

The shoe has already seen competitive success, worn by two-time HYROX world champion Tim Wenisch during his HYROX Elite 15 Male Singles victory in Melbourne in 2025. Wenisch described the shoe as a performance breakthrough, saying it gave him “speed, stability, and control” and boosted his confidence throughout competition. "When wearing the adidas Adizero Dropset Elite, I feel fast, stable, and in control. The grip is great and I feel supported throughout the race. This shoe unlocks a whole new level of confidence for me on the course. With it, I’m more determined than ever to defend my title and become the back-to-back World Champion in Stockholm later this year,” he said.

The launch arrives alongside adidas’ growing commitment to hybrid fitness, including its long-term partnership with ATHX, aimed at expanding competitive fitness events internationally. The Adizero Dropset Elite will be available to athletes and consumers from March 18.
