Johannesburg– As South Africa commemorated Youth Month, Aware.org brought together thought leaders, industry experts and young changemakers for an important panel discussion that examined two of the country's most pressing challenges affecting the next generation: youth unemployment and substance abuse.
Hosted under the theme "Conversations Worth Having with Today's Youth," the event moved beyond symbolic Youth Month celebrations and delved into the realities confronting millions of young South Africans. The discussion created a platform for open and meaningful dialogue, highlighting how economic hardship, social pressures and limited opportunities had continued to shape the lived experiences of the country's youth.
A key focus of the panel centred on South Africa's persistent youth unemployment crisis. Speakers unpacked how the shortage of meaningful employment opportunities had extended far beyond financial insecurity, affecting young people's confidence, mental wellbeing and outlook on the future. The discussion highlighted the growing need for collaborative solutions that empowered young people through education, skills development and greater access to employment opportunities.
The conversation also explored the history and evolving nature of substance abuse among young people. Panellists examined how socioeconomic inequality, peer influence, trauma and mental health challenges had contributed to harmful patterns of alcohol and substance misuse over the years. They emphasised that sustainable progress would require a holistic approach that prioritised prevention, education, early intervention and accessible support systems within communities.
Throughout the discussion, a common message emerged: South Africa's youth could not be expected to overcome these challenges alone. Panellists agreed that lasting change would depend on stronger collaboration between government, the private sector, civil society organisations and local communities to create environments where young people could access meaningful opportunities, support and pathways towards brighter futures.

While the discussion addressed difficult realities, it also celebrated the resilience, innovation and potential of South Africa's young people. Speakers encouraged young people to continue participating in conversations that shaped their futures, seek support when needed and contribute to building stronger and more inclusive communities.
Aware.org reaffirmed its commitment to promoting informed conversations around alcohol-related harm and youth wellbeing, reinforcing the importance of turning awareness into meaningful action. By creating spaces where complex issues could be discussed openly and constructively, the organisation demonstrated its ongoing commitment to empowering young people and strengthening communities across South Africa.
As Youth Month came to a close, "Conversations Worth Having with Today's Youth" stood as a timely reminder that meaningful progress began with honest dialogue. The event underscored the importance of listening to young voices, addressing the realities they faced and investing in the partnerships needed to build a healthier, more hopeful future for the next generation.
