There’s a new address for calm in Cape Town. Ceremony Matcha Bar has opened its doors on the Sea Point Promenade, where the rhythm of the Atlantic meets the city’s wellness culture. More than a café, it’s a destination built around ritual, flavour, and community, a coastal retreat infused with Ceremony’s signature sense of presence.

Founded in 2022 by Mikayla McClean, Ceremony has quickly become synonymous with introducing South Africans to the quiet strength of Ceremonial Grade Matcha. Her blends, sourced directly and sustainably from Kagoshima, Japan, have drawn a devoted community who see matcha not just as a drink but as a daily practice. The bar feels like the next, inevitable chapter: a physical embodiment of her philosophy.
The menu, crafted with Michelin-trained chef Kira Jacobs, pairs Japanese tradition with contemporary South African sensibility. Think matcha lattes layered with nuance, roasted hōjicha laced with warming chai spices, cold brews lifted by honey and florals, and savoury bakes kissed with Japanese shichimi togarashi. Every detail, down to the last sip, is designed to reflect Ceremony’s guiding principle—minimal, intentional, deeply sensory.
Yet the bar is more than what’s poured into a cup. It’s a gathering space, a point of connection. “Ceremony has always been about more than matcha,” Mikayla says. “It’s about creating moments of presence and connection. The bar is an extension of that – a place to pause, sip and savour.”
This ethos extends beyond the counter: from yoga flows at sunrise to sound journeys, collaborative pop-ups, and curated gatherings, Ceremony Matcha Bar is bringing slow living into Promenade.
Its interiors echo the coastline outside—travertine surfaces, pale woods, linen walls, and muted tones, Japanese minimalism softened with a coastal soul. The result is a space that feels both grounding and quietly luxurious, inviting you to step away from the pace of the promenade into something slower.
Open daily from 6:30 am, Ceremony Matcha Bar feels like an open invitation to slow down. Whether you’re a Cape Town local or just passing through, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger over a cup and sink into the ritual. You’ll find it at 217 Beach Road, right on the Sea Point Promenade with ocean views that make every sip feel even more restorative.
