As South Africans continue to invest more in their homes as spaces for living, working and self-expression, Leroy Merlin has expanded its footprint with the opening of its newest store in Alberton on 1 April 2026.
This move comes at a time when consumer behaviour is shifting. Homeowners are placing greater emphasis on comfort, personalisation and long-term value, driving increased demand for home upgrades, décor and more functional living spaces. Against this backdrop, Leroy Merlin’s expansion into Alberton responds directly to the need for quality products at accessible price points, supported by practical solutions and in-store expertise.
The retailer offers a wide selection across construction, hardware, kitchens, bathrooms, home décor and garden categories, with products sourced in partnership with local suppliers. Its South African presence has steadily grown, particularly across Gauteng, with a retail approach centred on inspiration, sustainability and hands-on guidance for both homeowners and trade professionals.
Located in the heart of Alberton, the new store is designed to be more than a traditional retail space. It aims to serve as a hub where homeowners, builders, DIY enthusiasts and first-time renovators can access both inspiration and the practical tools needed to bring projects to life.
From small weekend fixes to large-scale renovations, the Alberton store positions itself as a partner across every stage of the home improvement journey.
“Opening our Alberton store is an exciting moment for Leroy Merlin and a meaningful step in our ongoing investment in South Africa,” says Frank Dufourq, CEO of Leroy Merlin South Africa. “South Africans have a strong connection to their homes, and we see every store as an opportunity to empower people with the knowledge, tools and confidence to build, fix and improve the spaces that matter most to them.”
Beyond its product range, the store places strong emphasis on creating an environment where customers can learn, experiment and refine their ideas. Through in-store demonstrations, expert advice and hands-on support, visitors are encouraged to approach home improvement projects with greater confidence.
“Our mission is built on a simple understanding: South African homes face unique challenges that require more than standard solutions,” adds Dufourq. “We believe your home should be your sanctuary, a place of reliability and comfort. Whether it’s ensuring consistent access to power and water, maintaining comfortable living conditions, or implementing sustainable building solutions, we are committed to helping create a more resilient future for families.”
The Alberton store is also expected to contribute to local economic activity, creating employment opportunities and supporting skills development within the surrounding community.

To mark the opening, the store hosted launch celebrations including a bakkie motorcade, in-store experiences and family-friendly activities, welcoming residents to explore the space and discover practical ideas for their homes.
For Leroy Merlin, the Alberton expansion represents more than just another retail location. It signals a deeper commitment to meeting evolving consumer needs while building long-term relationships with local communities.
“At the heart of Leroy Merlin is a belief that the home is one of the most important places in people’s lives,” concludes Dufourq. “We’re excited to become part of the Alberton community and to help residents make their homes the best place to live.”

The Alberton store officially opened its doors on 1 April, welcoming customers from 09:00 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, alongside opening specials and promotional offers.
