Mandela Day Reminds Businesses that Community Impact Extends Beyond 67 Minutes

As South Africans marked Mandela Day by dedicating time to community service, businesses across the country also stepped up with initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities during the winter months.
Among them was The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC), which partnered with the Fountain of Love Centre by donating blankets and essential groceries to help children, families and elderly residents facing the challenges of winter.
Observed annually on 18 July, Mandela Day encourages individuals and organisations to spend 67 minutes serving others in honour of Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service. While many initiatives focus on volunteering, companies increasingly use the occasion to support community organisations that provide assistance throughout the year.
TGRC selected the Fountain of Love Centre for its 2026 Mandela Day initiative because of the organisation's long-standing work within local communities. For more than 20 years, the centre has supported orphaned and vulnerable children, child-headed households, older people and individuals living with disabilities through feeding schemes and community outreach programmes.
With colder weather placing additional strain on many households, the donated blankets and groceries were intended to address some of the centre's most immediate needs while providing warmth and nourishment during winter.
TGRC CEO Shabeer Jhetam says Mandela Day is a reminder that meaningful change begins with simple acts of kindness.
While the company's core mission focuses on building a more sustainable future through glass recycling, he argues that sustainability is ultimately about people. "Strong communities are built through partnership, compassion and shared responsibility," he says, adding that TGRC hopes its contribution not only provides comfort to the families supported by the centre but also encourages others to make a positive difference in their own communities.
Beyond the annual Mandela Day campaign, the initiative reflects TGRC's broader commitment to supporting the communities connected to South Africa's recycling ecosystem.
As community organisations continue to face growing demand for food, clothing and essential services, partnerships between businesses and local non-profit organisations remain an important way of extending support beyond a single day of service.
