Ofentse and Nelisiwe Mwase: Building a Legacy of Love and Creativity

Long before they became a powerhouse duo in the film and content creation industry, Ofentse and Nelisiwe Mwase were just two students navigating the world of storytelling at film school. Their connection was instant, not just in romance but in creativity.

For Nelisiwe, what stood out about Ofentse was how effortlessly he let her be herself. “He never tried to change me. I’ve always been a little different and very quirky, and he embraced that. He made me feel like my quirks weren’t something to tone down but to celebrate.”

Their love story was woven through moments of shared laughter, deep conversations about storytelling, and an unspoken understanding that they were meant to create together. Ofentse’s journey into filmmaking started behind the lens as a photographer. “My family had a business shooting township weddings, so I grew up around cameras,” he explains. “I started as a photographer, capturing those raw, beautiful moments at weddings. That’s where I really learned how to frame a shot, how to tell a story in a single image.”

One day, he handed a camera to Nelisiwe and told her to try shooting. That moment became a turning point.

“I had never even thought about filming before,” Nelisiwe admits. “But Ofentse gave me that first push, and I fell in love with it. That’s when I realised that storytelling wasn’t just something I admired—it was something I wanted to do.”

Their collaboration started naturally, with Ofentse handling the technical aspects and Nelisiwe bringing her artistic eye. Together, they built a rhythm, learning from each other and refining their craft.

"She’s got this incredible eye for detail, and I bring the technical side. We just work!"

Speaking about the foundation of their relationship and career, Ofentse recalls, “Nelisiwe has always been an artist at heart. I saw that from the very beginning. When we first started working together, it was effortless because we complemented each other’s strengths. She’s got this incredible eye for detail, and I bring the technical side. We just work.”

For Nelisiwe, their journey was never just about business; it was about purpose. “We were never in a rush to make things happen overnight. We wanted to create something meaningful, something that lasts. We weren’t chasing trends; we were focused on storytelling that resonates.”

Their synergy became evident early on, with each project refining their skills and deepening their respect for one another.

Over the years, their creative synergy evolved into something bigger—a production company that would become known for its originality and attention to detail. But working as a couple in business wasn’t always easy.

“People think working with your spouse is just fun all the time,” Nelisiwe says. “But you have to be intentional about making it work. We had to learn to separate work from personal life, to respect each other’s strengths and roles.”

Ofentse adds, “The key is remembering that we’re both working towards the same goal. So, even when we disagree, we remind ourselves that we’re on the same team.”

Their production company grew steadily, not because of overnight success but because of consistency. “Even when we had nothing, we made it work,” Ofentse says. “We stayed committed to producing quality work, no matter the circumstances.”

Their company has grown significantly, with projects that have garnered critical acclaim. Ofentse attributes this to consistency and staying true to their vision: “We never compromise on quality. Even when we had limited resources, we found ways to produce work that met our standards. I think people resonate with that authenticity.”

Nelisiwe expands on this, saying, “It’s not just about us anymore. We have a team now, people who trust us to lead. That comes with responsibility. We invest in our people, we create an environment where they can grow, and in turn, that strengthens our company.”

For Nelisiwe, the pride of their journey lies in the longevity of their partnership and career. “The fact that we’ve been together for ten years now, both as a couple and as business partners, is something I’m incredibly proud of,” she reflects. “The foundation we’ve built together, the way we’ve supported each other through every high and low, is a testament to the dedication we’ve put into not just our love, but our craft as well.”

"At the end of the day, we are husband and wife first!"

For Ofentse, his proudest moment came with recognition on a national scale. “Winning a SAMA (South African Music Award) was surreal,” he says. “To have our work acknowledged in such a big way, in the industry we’ve poured our hearts into, was validation of everything we’ve done. It was proof that the risks and sacrifices have paid off.”

These milestones, both personal and professional, speak to the depth of their commitment to each other and their craft, showcasing a partnership that’s built on love, hard work, and a shared vision for the future.

Despite their demanding schedules, Ofentse and Nelisiwe prioritise their relationship above all else.

“We don’t let work take over our lives,” Nelisiwe says. “We make time to just be a couple, to do things that have nothing to do with work.” Ofentse agrees, adding, “At the end of the day, we are husband and wife first. That’s what keeps everything else in check.”

Their ability to balance love and business has been instrumental in their success, proving that a strong foundation at home translates into a thriving career.

Psalm 91: “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

For both Ofentse and Nelisiwe, faith has been a guiding force throughout their journey. Nelisiwe speaks of the power of Psalms 91, which became a cornerstone of their belief system. “Psalm 91 is something I’ve held close to my heart, especially in the tougher moments,” she shares.

“The verse speaks of God’s protection, and I’ve always felt that He has covered us, kept us safe, and guided us through everything.” Ofentse echoes this sentiment, adding, “Through everything, we’ve had a deep sense of God’s protection over us, and it’s been a true source of strength.”

But it’s not just their faith that has kept them grounded; it’s also the unwavering support of their families. “Our parents have always been there for us,” Nelisiwe reflects. “They’ve been the backbone, encouraging us and praying for us. We’ve never felt alone in this journey because we have them in our corner.” Their love and encouragement have been constant. They’ve always believed in us, and that belief has been fuel for everything we’ve achieved.”

“Success doesn’t come overnight. If you’re in this for the long run, you have to be willing to put in the work, to grow together, and to trust the process.”

For those looking to build a business with their partner, they have invaluable advice. “Communication is everything,” says Nelisiwe. “You have to be honest about your expectations, your strengths, and your weaknesses. And you have to be willing to learn from each other.”

Ofentse emphasises patience: “Success doesn’t come overnight. If you’re in this for the long run, you have to be willing to put in the work, to grow together, and to trust the process.”

Their story is one of dedication, perseverance, and love—both for each other and for the art of storytelling. As they continue to push creative boundaries, one thing remains certain: Ofentse and Nelisiwe Mwase are just getting started.
