The 2026 Joburg Film Festival has wrapped up on a high note, with filmmakers, actors and industry leaders gathering to celebrate some of the most compelling stories on screen this year. The festival revealed its top winners during a glittering awards gala held at Theatre on the Square on Saturday, 7 March.

Taking home the coveted Best Feature Film award was Silent Rebellion, directed by Marie-Elsa Sgualdo. The gripping World War II-era drama also earned recognition for its cinematography and received a special mention for the performance of its lead actress, Lila Gueneau. The film was presented with the festival’s signature Nguni Horn trophy, an honour awarded to the most outstanding works showcased during the event.

Set in Switzerland in 1943, Silent Rebellion follows the story of Emma, a young woman navigating the social and religious restrictions of her rural community. After a traumatic assault leaves her pregnant, Emma must confront both personal hardship and the hypocrisy within her village. As the story unfolds, she struggles to shape her own future in a society that expects silence and submission.

The film stood out among nearly 700 global submissions. According to the jury, its emotional depth and thoughtful filmmaking resonated strongly with this year’s festival theme, “Feel The Frame”. The jury panel included Keith Shiri, Dorothee Wenner, Sia Stewart, Bongiwe Selane and Cait Pansegrouw.

Speaking about the awards, juror Sia Stewart reflected on the importance of the festival platform. She described it as a privilege to witness the creativity of filmmakers whose work was showcased, noting that festivals like this highlight the depth and beauty of African storytelling while creating space for artists from around the world to share stories shaped by culture, spirit and imagination.

The festival’s founder and executive director, Tim Mangwedi, emphasised that this year’s programme aimed to highlight the craft behind filmmaking. He noted that the winning films reflect the powerful combination of engaging storytelling and striking visual artistry, while also shining a light on the many creative professionals who shape what audiences see on screen.
