Summer basically comes with its own soundtrack: laughter, sizzling braais, clinking glasses, and someone loudly insisting they definitely know how to open a bottle of MCC. And while wine can absolutely be a “grab whatever’s cold” situation, there’s something magical about knowing what you’re pouring, and why it works.
Bianca Leonard, Marketing Manager at lifestyle technology specialist Solenco, puts it perfectly: “It’s an experience. And the right prep, the right food pairing, and the right setup can turn any gathering into a celebration.” She’s not wrong. One good bottle can change the entire mood of a summer afternoon.
If you’re spending your holidays in the Western Cape, consider yourself spoilt for choice. Start in Stellenbosch with Spier, known worldwide for its sustainability ethos, community upliftment, and award-winning wines. Their Signature Sauvignon Blanc is a standout; crisp, zesty, and layered with gooseberry, lime, and passion fruit. It’s the sort of wine that practically begs to be paired with citrus-cured salmon or goat’s cheese with avo and a splash of lemon.
Then make your way to Groot Constantia, established in 1685 and still going strong as South Africa’s oldest working wine farm. Their legendary Vin de Constance once made waves in royal courts across Europe, but their modern line-up holds its own with a long list of awards. While you’re in the area, don’t skip Klein Constantia or Creation in Elgin, both ranked in this year’s World’s 50 Best Vineyards Top 10.
And of course, no wine-season itinerary is complete without the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This hop-on, hop-off wander through the valley’s vineyards is hands-down one of the easiest (and safest) ways to spend a day tasting your way through the Cape Winelands. Expect stops at estates like Haute Cabrière, La Motte, Rickety Bridge and Grande Provence. Babylonstoren, famous for its gorgeous gardens and equally gorgeous wines, is a must.
If you’re in the mood for something indulgent, book a seat at Le Lude’s Orangerie restaurant. Their high tea is the stuff of legend: smoked trout with caper cream cheese, roast beef with goat cream cheese, mini frittatas, profiteroles, macarons… the list goes on. Pair it with a chilled glass of Le Lude Brut or Brut Rosé Cap Classique and you’ve basically won at festive living.

Even if you're not heading to Cape Town for the holiday, a backyard setup can feel like a vineyard experience with the right touches. Leonard suggests starting with your senses; notice the colour, swirl gently, inhale, sip slowly.
Upgrade your tools too: tulip glasses for aroma, flutes for bubbles, stemless glasses for stability, and the Solenco Wine Cooler with Decanter if you want perfectly chilled, aerated wine every time. “The little things; temperature, glassware, presentation, make a big difference,” she adds. “But yes, pace yourself. Responsible sipping is non-negotiable.”

And if you’re completely lost, follow local wine lovers like Dan Really Likes Wine or Julian Short, or subscribe to a wine-of-the-month club to explore at your own pace.
With the right bottle, thoughtful pairings, and a few clever tools, even a simple gathering can feel like a vineyard affair. And remember: let the wine tell its story, it always tastes better that way.
