Zimbali Lodge’s Strategic Refurbishment for Business Growth

Zimbali Lodge has completed a comprehensive refurbishment of its public spaces and conferencing facilities, sharpening its position in KwaZulu-Natal’s premium hospitality market while expanding its appeal to corporate and MICE travellers. Guest room renovations remain ongoing.

Set within the 700-hectare Zimbali Coastal Resort on the Dolphin Coast, the lodge’s location continues to be one of its strongest advantages. Just 15 minutes from King Shaka International Airport and 20 minutes north of Durban, accessibility remains a key draw for business travellers and event organisers.

“The upgrades were guided by a focus on improving guest flow and operational efficiency,” says Reinhard Visser, Operations Lead at Dream Hotels & Resorts. “The goal was to create spaces that function better for corporate groups on the move and leisure guests enjoying a restful stay, without losing the boutique character of the lodge.”

Enhancing the guest experience sat at the centre of the refurbishment. Front-of-house processes have been streamlined to create a clearer check-in journey and a more defined sense of arrival. Circulation routes between guest rooms, meeting venues and dining areas have also been reworked, easing movement during peak conferencing periods and reducing congestion.

Conference and banqueting facilities have been reimagined to support seamless event execution, with improved flow between pre-function, meeting and catering spaces. The updated layout accommodates larger corporate groups while preserving the lodge’s intimate, boutique feel.

Food and beverage operations have also been restructured to align with premium hosting expectations. Adjustments to restaurant and pre-function layouts improve circulation for both leisure guests and corporate attendees, while back-of-house processes have been refined to handle conferencing volumes without compromising plated service quality. The result is a more consistent experience across à la carte dining, banqueting and large-scale events.

Sustainability played a central role in the refurbishment, with a clear decision to preserve rather than replace the lodge’s defining design elements.

“The objective was to modernise the guest experience and operational flow while respecting the lodge’s architectural identity,” Visser explains. “The timber structures and carved wood features are part of its DNA, so these elements were restored and revitalised to keep the heritage of the space alive.”

“In hospitality there is often a tendency to replace rather than restore, but these pieces were built with integrity and craftsmanship over thirty years ago. Preserving them supports sustainability while retaining the authenticity of the space.”

High-durability finishes suited to coastal conditions and heavy conferencing use were selected to reduce long-term maintenance needs. Energy-efficient LED lighting has been installed throughout public and meeting spaces to lower electricity consumption, while locally sourced materials were prioritised to support regional supply chains and minimise environmental impact.

Beyond aesthetics, the refurbishment is a strategic move. It positions Zimbali Lodge to strengthen its average daily rate potential and increase midweek corporate occupancy in an increasingly competitive provincial market.

KwaZulu-Natal remains a key domestic conferencing destination, supported by strong air access through King Shaka International Airport and major trade platforms such as Africa's Travel Indaba, which continue to showcase the region to international buyers.

With improved operational flow, upgraded conferencing infrastructure and a renewed focus on sustainability, Zimbali Lodge is not just refreshing its look. It is refining how it competes.
