What happens when emerging talent, mentorship, and local production align under one creative vision? Pick n Pay Clothing’s Futurewear Collective answers this with a bold new limited-edition capsule that marks a milestone for the South African fashion landscape. For the first time, seven designers from the Futurewear programme have joined forces to create a collaborative collection, one that proves accessible fashion can be both innovative and deeply rooted in community.
Launched in 2020 by renowned South African designer Gavin Rajah and Pick n Pay Clothing Managing Executive Hazel Pillay, the Futurewear programme has consistently championed new voices in fashion. Today, it steps into a new era with the Futurewear Collective: a cohesive showcase that demonstrates what shared creativity and skill can achieve.
Each designer reimagined an exclusive signature floral print developed by Futurewear alumni and current mentor Julia Buchanan, using it as a canvas for their individual style. The result is a collection that feels unified yet distinctive, layered in both narrative and artistry.
“We’re incredibly proud of this range as it speaks to an ever-growing Futurewear community that is paving the way for the next generation of South African designers,” says Pillay. “Every piece has been proudly designed and made in South Africa, supporting local suppliers, factories, and creative talent across the industry.”
Guided by Rajah’s hands-on mentorship, the capsule collection reflects the power of shared learning and creative exchange. “This collection reflects what is possible when creativity meets collaboration,” he notes. “This is a fashion movement that uplifts South African design and celebrates our collective strength.”
The Collection
The Futurewear Collective features seven distinct looks from designers across the 2020–2024 programme cohorts, including:
Katekani Moreku (2020): A one-shoulder draped top and versatile wrap trousers
Sipho Mbuto (2021): A structured double-breasted blazer paired with culottes
Zarah Cassim (2021): A romantic, flowing dress inspired by movement and light
Kiav Mitoo (2023): A ruffled satin jumpsuit that plays with volume and texture
Cinani Nhlapo (2023): A playful baby doll dress with soft silhouettes
Ilse Vincent (2024): A bohemian blouse and balloon pants balancing ease and elegance
Yamkela Mahlelehlele (2024): A multi-tie blouse and cummerbund skirt designed for expression and versatility
At the heart of the collection is a bold floral print envisioned by Julia Buchanan, reimagined across light, airy fabrics and softly sculpted silhouettes. The pieces play with transparency, fluid movement, and thoughtful detailing—think gentle gathers, ribbon ties, playful volume, and airy layering that creates dimension without overwhelming. Designed to work together, the garments encourage styling that feels intuitive and individual, allowing wearers to create looks that shift from effortless to expressive.
Finishing touches like gauzy scrunchies, printed scarves, and coordinating bags bring the collection full circle, offering easy accessories that elevate everyday dressing with a sense of considered ease.
Fashion With Purpose
More than a showcase of style, the collection represents a meaningful investment in South Africa’s creative economy. By producing locally, Pick n Pay Clothing continues to champion sustainable manufacturing and nurture the networks that allow emerging designers to grow. The Futurewear Collective activated a broad ecosystem of talent, from designers and small-scale factories to independent makers, stylists, photographers and creative consultants, ensuring that the impact of the range reaches far beyond the garments themselves.
“Our mission is to make design-led fashion accessible to all South Africans,” says Pillay. “This collection is about building networks, fostering mentorship, and proving that when we work together, we elevate the entire industry.”
The Futurewear Collective is available in select Pick n Pay Clothing stores and online from Monday, 27 October 2025.
