Absa Increases Fuel Cashback as Prices Hit South Africans Hard


As fuel prices continue to climb, Absa has moved to ease some of the pressure on consumers by increasing cashback rewards on fuel spend.


From 1 April 2026, petrol prices rose by more than R3 per litre, with diesel climbing even higher. For many South Africans, fuel remains one of the most significant monthly expenses, directly affecting commuting, business operations and everyday mobility.


In response, Absa Rewards has increased its fuel earn cap by R2,000. The temporary adjustment will run until 31 May 2026, a period that typically sees heightened travel demand and increased financial strain.


“Fuel is one of the most immediate pressures on household budgets, and increases of this scale change how people move, work and spend,” says Alicia Raynard, Executive for Absa Rewards. “Customers are looking for real ways to stretch their money further, and our focus is on delivering value that is simple, immediate and felt in everyday life.”


Alongside the cap increase, the programme has introduced permanent enhancements to its fuel earn rates, aimed at improving the overall value customers receive from everyday spend.

Through its partnership with Sasol, customers can earn up to 30% cashback on fuel purchases. The structure prioritises immediate value at the point of purchase, rather than delayed rewards or points-based systems.


Customers receive the highest returns when filling up at Sasol service stations, reinforcing the partnership while encouraging more cost-conscious fuel behaviour, particularly during high-travel periods such as Easter.


The update forms part of Absa’s broader push to deliver more practical, everyday value through its rewards ecosystem, as consumers navigate rising costs across multiple categories.


At a time when many households are being forced to reassess spending, interventions like these reflect a growing focus among financial institutions on offering tangible, short-term relief rather than long-term incentives.
