At this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, themed “Marvels of Mzansi”, Sarah Langa turned heads with a look that was it was a fashion statement and a cultural tribute all in one. Dressed in a stunning gold embellished Balmain ensemble co-styled with celebrity fashion curator Phupho Gumede K, Langa paid homage to South Africa’s flamboyant and often misunderstood Skhothane subculture. Bold, rich, and unapologetically extravagant, the look captured the essence of what she calls “the real marvel of Mzansi.”

With the theme encouraging attendees to draw inspiration from their favourite South African marvels be it people, movements or moments, Sarah’s interpretation stood out for its depth and authenticity. Rather than opting for a literal icon or landmark, she chose to celebrate a cultural movement born in the townships. Her look honoured the Skhothane for their fearless defiance and creative flair. It reflected a distinctly local marvel rooted in self-expression and resilience during hard times.

The ensemble featured a matching set of wide-legged trousers and a plunging blouse, both adorned with intricate golden chain motifs that shimmered with every movement. Her waist was cinched with an opulent layered leather belt thst was equal parts sculpture and accessory, thus adding edge to an otherwise regal silhouette. Her accessories, including oversized gold earrings and layered chain necklaces, echoed the lavish spirit of the Skhothane aesthetic: extravagance as empowerment.

But Sarah’s beauty look sealed the deal. Her make-up was subtle yet statement-making; a golden shimmer smoky eye caught the light just right, paired with a brown-lined nude lip. Her hair was pulled into a slick, low ponytail that allowed her hat, a sharply tilted wide-brimmed black fedora, to take centre stage. The effect? A fusion of vintage drama and modern power dressing.

In her own words shared via Instagram, Langa explained: “Skhothane culture is more than designer labels and extravagant gestures, it’s a rebellion against limitation. Born in the townships, it flipped struggle into spectacle... If we’re going to survive, we’re going to do it in style.”

Her homage to the Izikhothane was intentional. She described the subculture as one of “South Africa’s boldest and most misunderstood cultural movements,” celebrating how its members used flamboyant fashion as a “powerful statement about status, value, and prosperity.”

The look was a reminder that fashion in South Africa often speaks louder than words. In paying homage to the Skhothane, Sarah spotlighted a subculture that used fashion as a way to reclaim dignity and joy amidst the daily struggles of township life. Their flamboyance wasn’t frivolous, it was deeply human. In a world that often tried to render them invisible, Skhothanes chose to be seen. They celebrated amidst adversity. Through her look, Sarah Langa echoed their message: that even when life is harsh, there is power in asserting one’s worth, and in showing up in style.
