There was a buzz in the air leading up to the ‘Shaka iLembe’ Season 2 premiere — and rightfully so. With the series being one of the most celebrated African productions in recent years, the event promised to be more than a regular South African red carpet. The occasion was expected to be a moment of cultural pride and high fashion. Themed “African Royalty,” the dress code set the stage for creative expression, and fans were eager to see how stars would interpret the brief. What followed was a stunning display of craftsmanship, storytelling, and style and Hope Mbhele was one of the standouts.
Hope Mbhele made a bold and unforgettable statement on the gold carpet at the ‘Shaka iLembe’ Season 2 premiere, wearing a custom-made gown that perfectly captured the theme of “African Royalty.” Styled by Phupho Gumede K and designed by Georges Malelu, the look was inspired by the elephant which is a symbol of strength, wisdom, and royalty across many African cultures. The dress was named Wena WeNdlovu, meaning “You, of the Elephants,” and served as a tribute to Bayede, iHlanga LoMhlabathi, and the Zulu Kingdom.
The gown was a soft gold-beige tone, richly detailed with beadwork and sequins that shimmered under the lights. It featured a sculpted, body-hugging silhouette with a standout feature: a woven black elephant head across the bodice, complete with a trunk that curved down the length of the dress. Layers of natural raffia and metallic thread added texture, echoing the look of savanna grass. Paired with bold jewellery and a wide shoulder length veil to match the dress, the entire look was beautiful and deeply rooted in culture.
What could’ve easily been just another red carpet turned out to be something far more special. We were pleasantly surprised by just how much the guests leaned into the theme, not only dressing up in traditional attire, but actually reimagining traditional motifs in fresh, exciting ways. Many looks felt like modern day storytelling through fashion. Hope Mbhele’s look was a perfect example of this. It was a thoughtful moisture of heritage, symbolism, and style that will be remembered for seasons to come.
